Young Sportswoman Of The Year sponsored by the Coventry and Warwickshire 2012 Partnership

Rowena Cole: The Coventry athlete won a bronze medal at the IAAF World Youth Championships and in 2008 she was awarded England Athletics’ Young Female Athlete of the Year.

Lauren Taylor: At the age of 14 Lauren became a full England cap in 2009 and won a Reserve/Alternate place in the 2009 Ricoh British Women’s Open.

Shannon Kincade: In 2009 Shannon has medalled in two A class European competitions and won gold in the British National championships.

Kyle Sweet: Judo’s Kyle Sweet picked up a gold in the cadet boys under 60kgs category in the British Championships and a Gold in the Senior English Open. And

James Burden: Broke British Age Group swimming Record for 50m Freestyle in a time of 23.37 sec. James was selected for the GB team for the European Junior Championships in Prague July 2009 and was a member of 4x100m relay team at the event which finished 5th.

Rhys Walker: Rhys is the top badminton player in GB in his age group, under 15. Currently, he is the National Singles Champion after successfully defending his National Singles Title that he won last year.

Junior/School Team Of The Year sponsored by Coventry University

Whitley Juniors U11: The team won the Coventry minor league losing only one game all season, with 115 goals scored and only 18 conceded.

Canon Maggs U11’s Football Team: The team reached ESFA Boys Under 11 Individual Schools national finals held at Wembley, eventually finishing fourth.  Furthermore the team won the BT Community Cup.

St Nicholas U12: The team won the Tamworth Minor League U11 age group this year following an undefeated season.  They also won the Tamworth Invitation Cup 2008.

Coventry Schools Sports Partnership Primary School Award sponsored by Carr of Nottingham

St Anthony’s Catholic Primary School: During this academic year specialist coaches delivered squash, gaelic football, girls football and cricket within the curriculum.  PE and sport is the key driver in developing confidence and self esteem for the pupils.

Jordan Baddeley, Queen Elizabeth School: Jordan began playing bowls three years ago.  He currently plays for the under 18 county team despite only being eleven years old.

Coventry Schools Sports Partnership Secondary School Award sponsored by Carr of Nottingham

Aaron Cosgrove: Aaron has regional honours in the 100m and 200m in the top divisions of Special Olympics Competitions and the EFDS West Midlands Meet.

Jason Cooper, Kenilworth School: Jason won triple gold medals at the National DAA Games in Indoor Hockey, Indoor Football and Basketball.

Higher/Further Education Sportsperson Of The Year sponsored by Coventry University

Jason Cuddy: In 2009 Jason successfully defended his English Universities and British Universities boxing titles.

Jessica Howells: Taekwondo’s Jessica again became a British Champion in her weight category.

Daniel Waddingham: Nuneaton swimmer Daniel Waddingham was selected to swim for England in the Youth Commonwealth Games at Pune in India, collecting a team bronze.

Brad Thompson: Brad has been involved with Christ the King Junior Football Club for nearly 20 years and for over 10 years has been the Junior Club Secretary. He has overseen the growth of the Junior Club section in that time to what is now the largest junior club in Coventry if not the West Midlands - with 23 teams at age groups from U9 to Youth - 3 Community Coaching sections for Year 1 to Year 3 and the start this year of Girls' Football at U12.

Richard Dean: Richard is now in his seventh season as secretary of the Nuneaton and Bedworth Minor Football League and has done a terrific job on behalf of all the member clubs within the Borough of Nuneaton and Bedworth. Richard recently picked up the ‘Services to Sport’ Award at the Nuneaton and Bedworth Sports Forum.

Andy Machon: Obtained the coveted Seal of Approval for Rugby Mini and Junior Lions. Successfully campaigned for the move of the young players to a more suitable training ground at the GEC grounds. Coached one of the most successful U16's team in Warwickshire with 4 of his players moving up to international level.

Community Sports Award sponsored by Heart of England Community Foundation

Longford Short Football Academy: This group is led by Jim Sweeney and John Robinson, two incredibly committed and passionate local coaches who devised the unique sport of 4-aside football. They deliver it for hours every week in Longford Park, located in a priority area, with a high proportion of under privileged young people accessing sessions.

Synergy Gymnastics: Synergy is the only Acrobatic Gymnastics Club on the East of the city and has GymMark accreditation, catering for approximately 115 gymnasts - 5-18 year olds from beginners to advanced level and has a significant waiting list.  establish an outreach section of the club, recently gaining Sport Unlimited funding to take acrobatic gymnastics into local schools and setting up the new club at the Moathouse Centre to be able to provide for the additional demand.

Sky Blues in the Community Disability Project: The project in its first year has already been a huge success, providing football opportunities for disabled people.  The community scheme now has ability counts teams (football teams for players with a number of disabilities) playing regular competitive football at U12’s, U16’s and adult age groups.  The project has also in partnership with Birmingham County FA developed a special schools football league for schools across CSW.  This is the first of its kind and proved to be a huge success, engaging 120 young disabled people.

Russell Earnshaw: Head Coach of Birmingham and Solihull Bees,  Russell guided the Bees to secure not only National Division 2 with a game to spare but to achieve promotion to the newly named Championship – the second tier of English rugby, just one below the Guinness Premiership. In the 2008/09 season the team smashed previous club records (10 of them) as well as numerous all-time National Division 2 records – including Highest Match Score and Most Tries.

Paul Bearman: Stratford upon Avon AC lead coach Paul Bearman’s athletes have achieved high UK rankings due to Paul’s multi skilled coaching ability and his constant encouragement of all athletes has resulted in many competing at county, national and international level. In recent years Paul has coached medallists at the English Schools Championships, the UK School Games and two National Sportshall champions.

Steve Townsend: Coach to European Junior Champion Sarah-Jane Perry, England Junior number 2 Chris Fuller and England Junior International Chloe Pearson. Steve is Head Coach at Kenilworth Squash Club which recently became England Squash Development Club of the Year.

Birmingham and Solihull Bees: The Bees not only National Division 2 with a game to spare but to achieve promotion to the newly named Championship – the second tier of English rugby, just one below the Guinness Premiership. Olton and West Warwicks Ladies 1st Team: Olton Ladies first team finished second in the Premier National league this season to gain a place in the European cup winners cup competition next year. They were the highest scoring team in the league, with 67 goals for.

Leamington FC: The Brakes clinched the BGB Midland Division title and promotion to the Zamaretto League Premier Division.

Sportswoman Of The Year sponsored by Henley College

Sarah-Jane Perry: Kenilworth’s Sarah-Jane has continued to impress in the world of squash, becoming European Junior Champion, British Junior Champion  and reached the quarter-finals of the British Senior Championships in 2009.

Melissa Menns: Melissa has had an excellent 2009, with a British title in the destruction category, a silver medal in the sparring category at the Welsh Championships, and a bronze at the same competition in the patterns category.

Danielle Stewart: Triathlete Danielle gained a silver medal in the European Age Group Duathlon Championships and a gold in the National Championships.

Sportsman of the Year sponsored by Elite Therapy

Mark Woodrow – Pivotal to the Birmingham and Solihull Bees’ National Division Two victory and promotion to the Championship.  Mark finished the season as the divisions top points scorer.

Rajeev Bagga – Rajeev is the All England veterans badminton champion and deaf world champion (a title he has held over five years).  He is currently taking the veterans world stage by storm, and in October 2008 he added the European veterans title to his badminton CV.

Mike Smallwood – Daventry’s Mike Smallwood won the British Age Group (60-64) Sprint Triathlon Championships at Milton Keynes in June.  He then went on to compete in the European Championship event finishing fifth.

Lifetime Achievement Award sponsored by University of Warwick

Mike Maddox – Mike has been dedicated to basketball for the last forty years helping to create The Warwickshire Basketball Area and the Warwickshire Basketball League.  Mike has been Warwickshire Area President and is estimated to have refereed over 600 games.

Raymond Nicholls – Raymond has been Secretary of Quinton Football Club for the last 40 years.  He is also treasurer of the club and for the past 10 years he has been the Vice Chairman of Stratford Football Alliance Council.

Ted McQuillen – Ted has dedicated enormous time to Christ the King football club since its founding in 1946 both as a team manager, treasurer and now trustee of the club.

Sporting Occasion Of The Year sponsored by Coventry City Council

Coventry City’s FA Cup game against Chelsea – The Sky Blues played Chelsea in the quarter-finals of the FA Cup at the Ricoh Arena.

Nuneaton Town’s playoff final victory – Nuneaton Town gained promotion from the BGB Midland Division after a tremendous play-off final victory against Chasetown.

Westfield Health British Transplant Games More than 1500 transplant athletes, their friends and families and donor families made Coventry their home during the national event, which took place from July 30 to August 2.
